9th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks successfully held by the Jeju Island UNESCO Global Geopark

The DIGITAL 9th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks, with the main theme: “FUN Geopark”, was successfully organized between 12th and 16th of December 2021 by the Jeju Island UNESCO Global Geopark, Republic of Korea.

Opening ceremony  

With 546 registrants coming from 52 countries the Conference gave the opportunity to Global Geopark Representatives and Geopark Professionals to discuss examples of best practices in Geoparks and at the same time it gave the opportunity to many colleagues coming from Aspiring Geoparks to present their efforts for the establishment of new Geoparks worldwide.

 The impact of the DIGITAL 9th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks is reflected not only to the impressive number of the participants coming all over the globe but also to the broad publicity locally as well as in many countries in Europe and the world.

The Conference was preceded by the Meetings of the 3rd GGN Ordinary General Assembly and the GGN Advisory Committee Meeting and the elections for the GGN Executive Board and the GGN Advisory Committee Chair and Vice Chair.

A special session was dedicated to the 1st Youth Forum where youth representatives from all around the world met, discussed and elected their representatives. 

The Opening Ceremony of the conference was organized on December 14th and the scientific sessions ran from December 14th to December 16th in parallel rooms. A workshop on Education was also organized by GGN Working Group on Education on December 15th.

During the Conference the participants had the opportunity to participate in virtual trips and explore the beauties of Jeju Island UNESCO Global Geopark. Participants had also the opportunity to have a tour at the Virtual Exhibition.

The closing ceremony of the Conference was held on December 16th accompanied by the GGN Certification Ceremony, the announcement of the GGN Honorary Members, the Film Festival Awards and the 10th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks 2023 announcement.

 All colleagues agreed that both the DIGITAL 9th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks and the associated digital meetings had very positive contribution to the cohesion and further development of GGN. Thus, the 9th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks is already recognized as the most successful digital Geopark’s conference ever!
