Magma Geopark aims to meet the criteria by autumn 2007 and become a member of EGN by 2008. Magma Geopark project is a regional development project supported by Rogaland and Vest- Agder county municipality, the municipalities of Bjerkreim, Eigersund, Flekkefjord, Hå, Lund and Sokndal, Dalane friluftsråd (recreational organisational body), Dalane folkemuseum (regional museum) and Næringssjefens kontor i Dalane (The Business Development Manager in Dalane). The aim of the project is to make a specific geological region of the south-western part of Norway one of the first Scandinavian geoparks approved by UNESCO.

To become a Global Geopark, it is necessary to be a member of the EGN if the geopark is situated in Europe. The application must follow criteria in “Geology and Landscape” and include detailed descriptions of the territory, the geosites, geoconservation efforts and natural and cultural heritage. There are also requirements for “Management Structures”, “Interpretation and Environmental Education”, “Geotourism” and “Sustainable Regional Development”.
