EVENTS: Three billion years of Earth history in the North West Highlands Geopark

A Geological Society of London event: the geology of the Northwest Highlands Geopark, ranging in time from the Archaean to the Quaternary.

The event will take place over six days.

This excursion will provide a very varied and multidisciplinary overview of the geology of the Northwest Highlands Geopark, ranging in time from the Archaean to the Quaternary. Issues include: 

  • Caledonian thrust tectonics            
  • Cambro-Ordovician carbonate sedimentology on the Laurentian shelf            
  • Mesoproterozoic rift sequence in the Stoer Group and foreland-basin sedimentation in Torridon Group            
  • Archaean crustal evolution and Proterozoic terrane boundaries            
  • Caledonian alkaline magmatism            
  • Quaternary glaciation
