Popularizing Geosciences: Hong Kong Rocks and Geopark Exhibition and Subject Talk Series

Source :http://www.globalgeopark.org Published :July 8, 2010

What is a geopark? Why does Hong Kong need to establish a geopark? How are the volcanic rocks in Sai Kung and the sedimentary rocks in northeast New Territories formed? Where are the most beautiful rocks, the wonders of geological features and their routes in Hong Kong? The answers can be found in the Hong Kong Rocks and Geopark Exhibition and Subject Talk Series. To raise general awareness on our valuable geological assets and broaden our interest in nature conservation, the Hong Kong Public Libraries and the Association for Geoconservation, Hong Kong has been jointly presenting subject talks in five public libraries from 15 May to 12 September, 2010 (Free admission). Concurrently, a roving panel exhibition titled A Geopark in Close Proximity is to be held at the Tseung Kwan O, Tin Shui Wai, Fanling, Shatin, Tung Chung and Tai Po Public Library. These exhibition panels provided by Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department are to introduce how close Hong Kong Geopark is to the modern cityscape.

The first two talks respectively held on 22 May and 4 July received overwhelming responses. The public (Full House) were amazed at the geo wonders of Hong Kong. All the attendants shared our view that rocks and landforms are the base of all ecosystem, thus must be conserved. They also recognise that rocks and landforms are our natural icons which create a uniqueness and sense of belonging. Geopark was widely accepted as a holistic approach to conserve our geological heritage, to popularise earth sciences and to enhance sustainable development.
