Increasing Cooperation among Geoparks and Improving Information Panels for Visitors

In February, the Japanese Geoparks Network (JGN), held its second national training seminar at Bandaisan Geopark in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The main theme of this training seminar focused on information panels and how to use them more effectively in guiding and educating visitors through the geoparks. Two representatives for the Itoigawa Global Geopark attended this seminar to share their experience as a Global Geopark and to learn more from the experiences of other JGN members.

Representatives of geoparks from across Japan attended this two-day seminar

The primary theme of the two-day seminar was “Information Panels and Their Role in Geoparks.” Lecturers from the Japanese Geopark Network Office and Japanese Geopark Council offered their own insights.

A variety of methods of execution were discussed, including ways in which to best place signs within a geopark to maximize visibility while not obstructing the natural beauty and geological integrity of the site. Also, how the use of thematic elements over a series of panel can help tie the information into a more interesting and more memorable narrative.

We hope by participating in similar training seminars both in Japan and around the world, we can continue to improve our geopark and engage our visitors and our community through science education and the appreciation of the natural world around us.
