To enhance the sustainable development of geotourism, geo-education and geoheritage, Unzen Volcanic Area Global Geopark of Japan signed a cooperation agreement with the Hong Kong Global Geopark of China on 15 June 2013.

Unzen Volcanic Area Geopark has a famous volcano in the world which is still active and demonstrates “the coexistence of an active volcano and human beings”. Hong Kong Geopark, on the other hand, displays magnificent volcanic columns, which are remains of volcano eruptions 140 million years ago. Both of a volcanic landscape of different ages, the cooperation agreement will help strengthen the existing relationship between the two places as well as offering further collaboration opportunities in relation to volcano and volcanology. This will be achieved through sharing scientific information and experience in best management practices, as well as collaborating in areas such as tourism promotion, research, education and training. It will also allow the two geoparks to work together to raise public understanding and awareness of wise use of geoheritage for sustainable development.
